Bullets back at the top

Defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets returned to the TNM Super summit following a 3-0 home win over Blue Eagles at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Yamikani Fodya’s sublime free-kick in the fourth minute, Hassan Kajoke’s 61st minute finish and Ephraim Kondowe’s strike in the 78th minute were enough to grant the People’s Team their first win in three games, having registered goalless draws against rivals Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Kamuzu Barracks.

Their victory, which came against the run of play, means Bullets have dislodged Silver Strikers from the summit of the 16-team log-table on two-goal difference following a tie on 25 points. However, Bullets have so far played 12 games, one more than the Central Bankers.

Yesterday, Bullets scored both goals against the run of play as it were the visitors that enjoyed possession for the better part of the match and hungry for goals only that they lacked the zeal and precision in front of goal.

Fodya proved why he is still one of the few active veterans at Bullets after a number of his peers were offloaded when he arrowed a free-kick from outside the box into the back of the net, leaving Eagles experienced goalkeeper John Soko helpless.

However, it was that Eagles that had the most chances in the first half with Richard Rapson being the main architect of the Malawi Police Service (MPS) team’s numerous attacks.

Bullets seemed to have upped their game in the second segment, where they made some lethal attacks including the one that saw Kajoke finishing off Anthony Mfune’s defence-splitting pass in the penalty area.

Substitute Kondowe sealed the victory with a thunderbolt in the 78th minute with Mfune once again being the provider.

Said Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa after the match: “We struggled to keep possession and we misplaced a lot of passes. However, I should thank my charges for their sharpness in front of goal and for thwarting the Eagles’ numerous attacks. It feels good to be back at the top.”

Blue Eagles assistant coach Christopher Sibale attributed their defeat to poor finishing.

In other matches, hosts Karonga United beat Salima Sugar Dedza Dynamos 2-1 while Civil Service United dropped points at home after a goalless draw with Ekwendeni Hammers.
